This prayer request for healing prompted the following post. First, some facts. The Center for Disease Control gives this definition for asthma on its website:

… a disease that affects your lungs. It causes repeated episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and nighttime or early morning coughing. Asthma can be controlled by taking medicine and avoiding the triggers that can cause an attack. You must also remove the triggers in your environment that can make your asthma worse.

The National Institutes of Health offers this:

…a chronic disease that affects your airways. Your airways are tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs. If you have asthma, the inside walls of your airways become sore and swollen. That makes them very sensitive, and they may react strongly to things that you are allergic to or find irritating. When your airways react, they get narrower and your lungs get less air. This can cause wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and trouble breathing, especially early in the morning or at night.

Asthma is treated with 1) quick-relief medicines to stop asthma symptoms and 2) long-term control medicines to prevent symptoms.

These are the natural, medical definitions and outside-in resolutions are recommended. However, despite the influence and attraction of drug commercials, and the availability of remedies, many people would prefer to enjoy a cure rather than a care for their ailments.

So, let’s explore the inside-out, taking a look at some alternative perspectives:

• How Asthma Healed My Heart:  My journey to healing meant confronting some fears, saying some prayers, and learning to love my dog again.
• Spiritually Rooted Diseases:  Asthma may be rooted in fear and anxiety; and toxins have been building up from a spiritual root.
• Emotions and the underlying causes of dis-ease. an alternative perspective.

Asthma and Hay Fever:  Johns Hopkins University is now teaching that Hay Fever and Asthma are not caused by air born allergens. It has nothing to do with breathing, dander, dust, pollen, etc. Anxiety and fear cause it. It can be inherited, but it’s coming out of deep-rooted anxiety and fear. I have proved this many times over.

• Spiritual Roots of Disease:  A perspective from the Moody Manual [Deliverance]  God has not given us the spirit of fear. [2 Timothy 1:7] Fear is a spirit that God has not given. Many roots to dis-ease starts with fear.

What else does the Bible say about breath?

First mention is in Genesis 2:7
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Job 33:4
The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.

Based on these two verses, asthma could be interpreted as a challenge to our very connection to God.

You will meditate on the Scriptures day and night – the ones that promise what belongs to you. Get them into your system. Believe them, and prophesy them over yourself to the point that you can command the negative factors to leave your being. Be sure you have forgiven any who have “trespassed against you.” It is amazing how confidence in prayer grows, expands and liberates. It even makes us bold enough to pray for others and believe for their healing.

Finally, worship God with abandonment. Adore him. Tell him how much you love him and how grateful you are for his loving you. Sing to him. Delight in his holy word. We have experienced His Presence in a wonderful way during our midnight worship meetings. Read some of the posts at GloryQuest.org. He is waiting for you also – in the land of the living.

With Resurrection Sunday just recently observed, let us take note of the finality of “It is finished” and “by his stripes we are healed.” And that ought to settle it in every Christian’s mind once for all time. Jesus declared something else that applies here: John 10:10 and something referred to in Hebrews 13:5-6,8. Yet, when we haven’t yet identified the “thief,” we carry on in other ways.

Psalm 150:6 sums it up:

Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

Jesus says in the Bible that the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy . . . [John 10:10] And it is unmistakeable that this parent’s joy has been stolen with the disappearance of her child.

How do we pray for these loved ones?

• First, we ask for God’s mercy and grace in the circumstance, and certainly for the safe return of the child to family and friends.
• We also pray for the peace that passes understanding to the troubled parents.
• Then we pray for deliverance of the abductor or kidnapper responsible for the child’s disappearance because, as the Apostle Paul stated,

We wrestle not against flesh and blood. . . . [Ephesians 6:12]

So we pray even more fervently, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven.” As more of heaven breaks into the earth realm, we can look forward to joy instead of sorrow.

Emotions are breaking out, globally, locally, and personally. Many issues are marked by violence, as the news readily reports. They affect families, the public, and even nations. These outbreaks are fueled by anger, and many people are confused.

What is going on? It is recorded in John 16:33 that Jesus foretold these troubles. He also foretold how we transcend them. (Mark 13:24 -34) Yet, though many professing Christians are confused, they neglect to pray.

God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33). The Apostle Paul advised that we wrestle not with flesh and blood, but with adversarial spirits (Verse12 of Ephesians 6:10-18). Moderns often refer to this as “The Matrix.”

What’s the bottom line? Perhaps, “Who’s in control?” Of course, people do relate to other people and this is where so much friction takes place, in relationships. We often associate with energy vampires, manipulative people, and just plain bullies. So here are some various perspectives on “how to protect your own emotions.” Some of the applications might seem questionable. Our position is: Listen and then “Search the Scriptures.”

• Victim
• Controller
• Constant Talker
• Drama Queen

Despite their good intentions, many are capable of doing more harm than good because of three cautions that are either overlooked or ignored in some of the quickie workshops and introductory training sessions for prayer ministry, namely:

• Do not give advice.
• Do not interject your own personal experience.
• Do not get ahead of Holy Spirit.

Let’s take a look at these ministry points more closely.

Please don’t give advice; and keep your opinions to yourself.

Your role is to assist the recipient through prayer and Scripture only. The focus is to be above the natural because of what prayer is, a transcendant engaging with God.

The time and space are dedicated to an opportunity for the recipient to express, hear from God, and release a burden, or begin to heal, or get higher perspective.

Please don’t interject your own personal experience.

Life is not measured out in cookie cutter shapes and portions. Although some experiences may seem similar, no two are alike because each individual is unique and their responses to the events in life are unique to them. Ministry is not a time to talk about you, even if you should happen to be an authority.

Because of the capacity in which you are serving, you are only a conduit for the Savior’s Holy Spirit. He is in charge. Listen.

Please don’t get ahead of Holy Spirit; and don’t draw conclusions.

Because we need supernatural wisdom and insight, we must be especially sensitive to promptings from Holy Spirit. You might receive a word, or phrase, or some type of impression.

If you give sufficient preparation for this to happen, then it is OK to tell the recipient, calmly and simply, what you have sensed; then ask if it might mean anything to them.

How to Pray for the Sick – Inner Healing

It is preferable to pray in a team of two or three, nevertheless:

• Do listen carefully to the prayer recipient.
• Do keep your eyes open. Watch and pray.
• Do use the Scriptures.
• Do invite and wait for prompting from Holy Spirit.

At holiday times of the year, it seems especially difficult to deal with sickness and loss. Some of us have had loved ones to pass on, and others are reminded of events that were once shared with dear ones. It was in December that two of my close relatives died; one of my grandmothers when I was a child, and my father only seven years ago.

It seems we were shielded from our grandmother’s passing, though she briefly convalesced and expired in my parents’ bedroom. I remember hearing my mother’s anguish as my brother and I waited in the apartment next door with neighbors. The end had come. It also marked an end for me, the end of a dream.

I enjoyed dancing very much, and I looked forward to dance classes and dance recitals, but my grandmother’s dying request was for me to stop dancing. This dear soul had taught me to pray and took me to church. I promised her that I would stop dance school, and because piano lessons were no consolation, I turned my back on them also. That year, however, we discovered Santa’s secret hideaway under our parents’ bed. Grief was somehow tucked away until later years.

My dad’s passing was connected to an unexpected impact. Though I was in process of returning to my hometown to monitor his care, his end came haltingly, and “assisted” by a morphine drip. When I arrived and viewed his body at the mortuary, I got the impression that he was miffed by the ordeal. His funeral, however, was a celebration of home going. I was close to my dad, but tears never came, and no holiday blues. Then, my brother’s grief manifested as a sudden, violent verbal attack against me, followed by intentional isolation and strained communication. (He is closer to our mother.)

That brings me to date and the prospect of grieving a matter with yet another relative. I have previously posted an article about mother-daughter relationships. Now, counseling through prayer ministry has brought me to a realization that addresses my own personal grief in this holiday season, and brings closure to the end of a different dream.

Somehow we endure certain things through hope, and that can be unhealthy. The Bible clearly states that hope deferred makes the heart sick [Proverbs 13:12]. Then, in spite of ourselves, events sometimes trigger a turning point. So I can surely testify that I am now turning for good.

In this season when the Hallelujah chorus of Handel’s Messiah garners the delight of many listeners, I acknowledge a more recent Hallelujah that captures the painfulness of praise in the midst of chaos and confusion and dysfunction.
